Really awesome recording capabilitiesThe R-4 uses a 40GB hard disk to record to. It can record between 1 and 4 simultaneous channels of audio onto WAV or Broadcast Wave Format (BWF, essentially it's WAV format with descriptions in a header) files. The disk holds about 58 hours of WAV recording at 16 bit/44.1kHz sampling, this drops to a mere 17 hours if you go to 24 bit/96kHz sampling. No stopping to change the DAT tape out every 2 hours, you just let the thing run (providing you have adequate power, which we will be talking about). It's got 2 built in microphones, if you want to use them, and it has 4 line/mic jacks with this nifty combination that accepts XLR balanced, 1/4 phone plug balanced or unbalanced, and there are switches for line/mic level and, importantly in this class of recorder, phantom power. Good microphones are usually condensers, especially for quiet acoustic recordings, and all good condensers require a proper phantom power (usually 48Vdc on professional kit).
