Lou Reed Thought The Beatles 'Were Garbage'

February 18, 2015

They might be one of the most influential bands of all time, but a newly unearthed interview has revealed that Lou Reed was not a fan of the Beatles. Speaking in a 1987 interview, which has been used as part of PBS's "Blank on Blank" series, Reed said of the Fab Four:

"I never liked the Beatles. I thought they were garbage. If you say, 'Who did you like?' I liked nobody."

As Consequence of Sound notes, Reed felt that other bands were "painfully stupid" when compared to his act the Velvet Underground, which was formed "to elevate the rock 'n' roll song and take it where it hadn't been taken before."

He said of the band's contemporaries, "From my point of view ... the other stuff couldn't come up to our ankles, not up to my kneecap, not up to my ankles, the level we were on, compared to everyone else. I mean they were just painfully stupid and pretentious, and when they did try to get, in quotes, 'arty,' it was worse than stupid rock 'n' roll. What I mean by 'stupid,' I mean, like, The Doors."
