Jazz Chord Workout [Lessons]

By June 03, 2015

This week we will work on playing through three intermediate level jazz chord workout exercises.

The exercises begin with the common seventh chord qualities, then move on to using chord extensions and finally progress to working on altered chords.

When I am working with my own private students, I like them to understand that the foundational chords will be the; major 7, minor 7 and the dominant 7th chords.

Once these 7th chords are developed to a decent level of skill, I will add in the study of extended chords; 6th, 9th, 11th and 13th chords.

After the extensions, next come the slightly more challenging altered chords such as the; b9, #9, b5 and #5.

It may take awhile to learn every one of these chords to a decent playing level, but once you can learn these, and integrate them into your playing, you'll be jamming out on jazz tunes in no time. Enjoy the lesson!
